Guerrilla included in a huge fanzine exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chile

“Some say that punks invented fanzines, others say that was NY underground comic, others say that are just for talking about politics, others say seudo-artists-hipsters  have appropriated the medium.

To me, all that I do not care much, because the thing about zines is that they have no owner, or manager, or academy or absolutely no one to control them in their production and dissemination. With these statements you might say that fanzines are free, but behind that freedom there is someone methodical. We make them because we like it, but more than anything motivates us a special aura that has this fetish object in front of the digital flow of information.

Remember the posters, newsletters, popular lire, satirical pages and several desktop publishing of the past that have had a high value of social cohesion, disinformation and artistic experimentation. Fanzines today have a bit of that self-publishing thing on expanding its limits due to experimentation with new reproductive technologies and the recovery of ancient engraving techniques.

The fanzine-o-theque “Espigadoras” has collected about 400 issues from Latin America, Europe and the United States in various meetings of microeditorial and desktop publishing as well as with the exchange by mail. The collection exists thanks to nomadism, to the underground scene that welcomes us every time we travel to a festival, and most of all from the exchange of own fanzines with the selection of 150 zines you can now see in the fanzine exposed in MAC Quinta Normal. Zinesters are covering many different themes, here you will find zines on counterculture, do-it-yourself (DIY), self-representation, music, trans-feminism, comics, fiction, photozine, microeditorial, experimental formats, etc.”

The previous quoted text is part of what you see at the facebook event of the exhibition, written by Natalia Matzner, who is also curator of the show. Natalia Matzner (Santiago de Chile, 1983) is a teacher, writer and as ‘Ratalia Espigadora’ is a self-publisher that attempt to make a relation between the material part of the book with his content, its a fetishist trying to get to the anarchy of the sense.

We’re happy to contribute in what it seems a new way to show to the main public, how important it is to express ideas, issues, subjects and art through self-publishing also in such an important place as a museum!
